Jacynth's First Astronomy Lecture

Judy and Perry got us tickets for the Summer Lecture at the Perth Observatory up in the Perth Hills, which lies about 40 minutes drive east from our place. We tried getting Jacynth to nap for awhile as Perry and Judy led us to the place...

Here we are at the Perth Observatory...it was our first time there, despite us having been in Perth for almost two years.

We laid down our mats on the lawn and got our food out for our picnic dinner, while Aunty Fiona entertained Jacynth...

Judy brought a cheese spread, some salad, chicken etc, and we brought koniyaku jelly and vegetarian curry puffs!

The lecture started at about 8pm, not long after the sun set and the stars started to appear in the night sky. What a unique venue for an astronomy lecture... right beneath the starry sky! In fact, we could see the Milky Way stretching out right above us, as Dr. Miller Goss from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in the US talked about Ruby Payne Scott, one of the pioneers in Australian Radio Astronomy.

Jacynth, of course (to our relief), slept right through the lecture... oh well, there'll be further opportunities to brainwash her into becoming an astronomer in the future...

She did enjoy looking at all the pretty pictures in the main lobby afterwards...
