Day 1 - Perth to Busselton

Our 3 day journey began, with Agnes and Preeta taking a bus to Perth city to collect the rented car. They then succesfully arrived home with Agnes (gasp!) as the navigator and map-reader! So the three of us, together with Kevin's former MMU colleagues Ka Sing and Chue Poh (who are here for 6 weeks on a study attachment with a government organization called CSIRO), set out for the Margaret River region slightly after lunch for a weekend holiday! There was late drama involved with Kevin having to do a last minute presentation just before he was about to leave office before noon. But by about 1pm, we were on our way down south on that most rainy of days. Whenever there was a break in between the drizzles, we stopped by to catch some fresh air (or freezing wind from Preeta's perspective!) and some photograhs:

Lake Clifton...
...home of the thrombolites, one of the oldest forms of life on earth.
The Tuart forest and wildflowers...
Busselton famous 2km jetty that was closed for renovation...
Then it was back to the chalet to prepare for dinner - the essential Aussie sizzle (BBQ)! We had burger patties, sausages, mussels (bought at $3.50 per kg!), potatoes, lots of onions and even some kangaroo meat. While the rest started cooking, Kevin drove frantically around town looking for a store that was still open to buy some cooking oil (not enough!) and a bottle of wine. It's difficult enough to find a store that's open at 6.30pm in Perth, not to mention a smaller town like Busselton! But he managed to find one about 5 km out of town.
The essential Aussie experience!
